The TellMaris project focuses on tourists and the European citizens on the move, on their need for quick access to correct and customised tourist and leisure information. In the project, boat tourists travelling in the Baltic Sea Region were used as a test case. The main scientific objective in TellMaris is the development of a new technology that supports interactive action with 3D maps to retrieve tourist information on mobile computers.

The first standard mobile 3D programming interface, OpenGL ES http://www.khronos.org/opengles/ emerged in July 2003, near the end of the Tellmaris project. HUT researchers rapidly ported a student-written OpenGL based 3D map prototype to OpenGL ES, being able to give an unofficial demonstration of one of the world's first OpenGL ES applications in the project's final review. Support was limited to Linux, Windows and Windows CE. The windows version is available in the software page. 3d user interface and virtual environment.
